Frequently Asked Questions

Occupational therapy helps individuals build skills for life, play, and work. It supports people of all ages in participating in the activities that matter most to them whether that's getting dressed independently, returning to work, caring for a child, or engaging in hobbies.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) assess how physical, cognitive, sensory, or emotional factors affect daily life and work with you to find practical strategies and approaches to improve your independence, confidence, and quality of life.

While both occupational therapy and physiotherapy aim to improve physical function, they have distinct focuses. Physiotherapy addresses physical movement and mobility difficulties, often through exercises and manual treatment and therapies.

On the other hand, Occupational therapy takes a broader view, looking at how an individual functions across all areas of daily life, including self-care, play, and social participation at home, work, or in the community.

As an example, a person who has sustained a physical injury may benefit from physiotherapy to improve their mobility, while an occupational therapist can help them adapt their lifestyle and find solutions such as bathroom/shower modifications or sourcing assistive technology (e.g., a wheelchair, recliner chair, or adjustable bed) required to continue to perform daily activities and maintain their independence at home, work, or in the community.

Similarly, a person with a mental health condition may benefit from occupational therapy to develop coping strategies and build skills to manage daily stressors and maintain their participation in meaningful activities, while physiotherapy may not be as relevant to their needs.

In many cases, both physiotherapy and occupational therapy can complement each other, with physiotherapy improving physical function and occupational therapy addressing the broader impact on daily life and participation. The two often work together as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Occupational therapy is for everyone from young children to older adults. You may benefit from OT if you or someone you care for is

  • A child experiencing delays in development, learning, sensory processing, or school readiness
  • An adult recovering from injury, illness, surgery, or a mental health condition who wishes to return to work or their usual daily activities
  • An older adult who would like to remain safe and independent at their home
  • A person living with a disability such as autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy or an intellectual disability who would like to build and improve essential life skills.
  • Anyone finding that everyday tasks such as cooking, dressing, driving or social participation have become more challenging

Our therapists work with individuals to develop personalised plans and strategies that build skills and empower them to enjoy their daily routines and participate in the activities they love.

The answer is yes if you are eligible for a Medicare-subsidised occupational therapy service. For Medicare OT sessions, a valid Medicare and a Care Plan from your GP are required. If you have any questions regarding this process, please reach out to our team. We will guide you through every step.

If you are an NDIS participant, you do not need a referral to get started. You can contact your support coordinator or plan manager for assistance, or simply reach out to our team directly. we will guide you through the process.

If you do not have a Medicare card or are not an NDIS participant, you can simiply refer yourself by submitting our New Client Form.

Consider an OT assessment if your child is experiencing difficulties with

  • getting dressed or,
  • managing daily self-care or,
  • handwriting and fine motor tasks or,
  • attention and sensory sensitivities or,
  • social play or emotional regulation or,
  • school readiness or,
  • following diagnosis of autism, ADHD, developmental delay or a physical condition that prevents from accessing daily routines

Our therapists take the time to understand your child's unique strengths and challenges, offering friendly, hands-on support to help them build essential life skills so they can continue to develop, learn and participate in play and daily routines.

Our therapists work closely with children diagnosed with autism or developmental delays, and their families, to address challenges in sensory processing, social interaction, and daily living skills. Sessions are tailored to each child's unique needs. Through play-based activities and practical interventions, therapists support children in achieving their developmental goals.

Our therapists can conduct home assessments to identify safety risks and recommend practical modifications such as grab rails, ramps, shower chairs, or non-slip flooring to help your loved ones stay independent and reduce the risk of falls.

Our therapists can assess your needs and recommend the right equipment and therapy to support your recovery and independence. Please note that the equipment sourcing depends on your individual needs and funding stream (NDIS, Support at Home Program, or Medicare), so costs for equipment and installation may be fully or partially covered. Our team will guide you through every step of the way from assessment to installation, and help you access the funding you need to maximise your independence and quality of life.

Session fees vary depending on the type of service, duration, and your funding source. We always discuss costs with you upfront before you commit to any appointments.
