It’s new, it’s the talk of the town, and it’s brimming with possibilities. But how much do we really know about it? Fortunately, I love diving into new technologies, especially those that can improve lives. Virtual Reality (VR) is not just the future of therapy—it’s already here! (Meta, feel free to sponsor me!)
During my career as a community OT, I’ve had the chance to utilise the Meta Quest headset. My introduction to it dates back to my early days as a Therapy Assistant, thanks to an eccentric IT guru at the clinic. From the moment I tried it, VR opened my eyes to new worlds and set my OT brain buzzing with possibilities. I quickly realised that even the trickiest clients could benefit from it.
My first thought was, “Wow… my clients are going to move a lot using this.” With my OT goggles on, I could see how it would enhance gross motor skills, motor coordination, and overall physical engagement. And let’s not forget, the applications and games in VR are incredibly fun! Unlike traditional video games, the 180/360-degree view captivates the mind, which is especially beneficial for those experiencing chronic pain. Some of my clients have reported that after using VR, their pain disappears—and you can even find scholarly articles supporting this. It’s evidence-based!
Is there any harm in trying it? Absolutely not! Of course, there are some downsides, like potential motion sickness, but the benefits far outweigh the risks. I can confidently say that VR is one of the safest and most engaging intervention tools available—one that both therapists and clients will appreciate.

If you’d like to experience it for yourself, feel free to book a session with me at Choose Therapy. Let’s work together to achieve your goals! I’m available to come to you on weekends and can’t wait to show you this incredible technology.
